Jani Wickholm (1977 – 2026)

Their Story

Jani Wickholm was a Finnish pop and rock singer who rose to prominence through his success in the Finnish music industry. Born in Kerava, he became widely recognized after finishing as runner-up on the Finnish MTV3 competition Finnish Idols in 2004, where he was narrowly surpassed by eventual winner Hanna Pakarinen. Before his music career took off, Wickholm worked as a forklift operator, as did his rival Pakarinen. Wickholm achieved significant chart success with his recordings. His debut album Kaikki muuttuu (Everything Changes) topped the Finnish album charts, establishing him as a formidable presence in the domestic music scene. His second album, Alumiinitähdet (Aluminium Stars), demonstrated his continued appeal, charting for three weeks. Throughout his career, Wickholm's commercial performance remained competitive with that of other notable Finnish artists of his era. Wickholm passed away on June 23, 2026, at the age of 48. In his later years, he faced health challenges; he was diagnosed with cirrhosis in 2017 and received psychiatric treatment in 2024. His death marked the end of a career that had shaped Finnish pop music in the early 2000s.
