James Victor Gbeho was a distinguished Ghanaian lawyer, diplomat, and statesman whose career spanned several decades of service to his nation and the broader African continent. Born in 1935, he rose to prominence as a career diplomat, serving Ghana in diplomatic missions across the globe, including postings in China, India, Nigeria, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. His expertise in foreign policy made him an invaluable asset to Ghana's government during critical periods of African history. Gbeho's most prominent roles came in the 1990s and 2000s. He served as Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1997 to 2001 under President Jerry Rawlings, overseeing the nation's international relations during a significant period of West African politics. Subsequently, he represented the Anlo constituency in Parliament from 2001 to 2005, continuing to influence policy at the national level. His diplomatic achievements extended beyond Ghana: he served as Ghana's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York from 1980 to 1990, and was later appointed by UN Secretary-General as a special representative to Somalia in 1994. In recognition of his distinguished career and leadership, Gbeho was unanimously elected President of the ECOWAS Commission from 2010 to 2012, a position that underscored his respect among West African leaders. He passed away at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy of diplomatic excellence and regional service.
