Iván Szelényi (1938 – 2026)

Their Story

Iván Szelényi was one of the most important and successful Hungarian social scientists of the 20th century, achieving major scientific and educational successes largely in Australia and the United States. Born in Budapest in 1938 to an intellectual family, Szelényi earned an economics degree in 1960 and quickly pivoted toward sociology, using a Ford scholarship to study at Berkeley in 1964. His early career at Hungary's Institute of Sociology was cut short when he was arrested in 1974 for attempting to smuggle abroad a manuscript co-written with György Konrád; expelled from Hungary in 1975, he built a distinguished international academic career. As William Graham Sumner Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Yale University and former Dean of Social Sciences at NYU Abu Dhabi, Szelényi became renowned for his groundbreaking work on social inequality and the structural problems of socialist and capitalist economies. He identified the state socialist economy as a redistributive system and predicted the disintegration of communist order through analyzing its social contradictions. His theoretical contributions and empirical research on urban housing, gender, social stratification, and post-communist transitions established him as a leading voice in comparative sociology. Szelényi's contributions were recognized through his election as a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and his fellowships at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He served as President of the Hungarian Sociological Association and Vice-President of the American Sociological Association, receiving both UCLA's Luckmann Distinguished Teaching Award and Hungary's Széchenyi Prize. He authored or co-authored numerous influential books and continued engaging with social questions throughout his life.
