Their Story

Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was the Emir of Qatar from 1995 until his abdication in 2013, a transformative period that reshaped the nation's global standing and economy. In a bloodless coup in 1995, he assumed power from his father, Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, and subsequently oversaw Qatar's rise as one of the world's wealthiest nations per capita, driven largely by the expansion of natural gas production to 77 million tonnes annually. During his 18-year reign as an absolute monarch, Hamad established significant diplomatic and cultural infrastructure for Qatar. He founded the influential Al Jazeera media network in 1996, which became a major voice in global journalism. His tenure saw Qatar host major international events, including the 2006 Asian Games, 2011 AFC Asian Cup, 2012 UN Climate Change Conference, and the decision to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup—marking the nation's arrival as a significant player on the world stage. Economically, Hamad's establishment of the Qatar Investment Authority proved particularly consequential; by 2013, the fund had invested over $100 billion globally in assets ranging from The Shard and Harrods to Paris Saint-Germain and major multinational corporations. His foreign policy navigated complex regional relationships, securing U.S. military bases while maintaining dialogue with Iran and engaging in mediation efforts including negotiations between the United States and Taliban. In June 2013, Hamad announced his succession plan, handing authority to his fourth son, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and thereafter became known as the Father Emir.
