Haden Knox (1937 – 2026)

Their Story

Haden Edward "Eddie" Knox was a prominent North Carolina politician and attorney who dedicated his life to public service and legal excellence. A native of Davidson, North Carolina, he earned his B.S. from North Carolina State University and his law degree from Wake Forest University. Knox first made his mark in politics as a state senator representing the 22nd Senatorial District from 1971 to 1974, where he became known for his Democratic principles. In 1976, he chaired the successful gubernatorial campaign of Jim Hunt. His most visible role came as the 49th mayor of Charlotte, serving two terms from 1979 to 1983, during which he worked on significant city issues including annexation and zoning. Though he lost his bid for the North Carolina governorship in 1984, Knox remained active in public and political life, eventually changing his party affiliation multiple times throughout his life. Beyond politics, Knox built a distinguished legal career, founding Knox Law Center in Charlotte in 1964, where he became recognized as one of North Carolina's most respected attorneys. A Board Certified Trial Specialist, he received numerous honors including selection as a Legal Elite and Super Lawyers Award recipient. In 2008, he was inducted into the General Practice Hall of Fame by the North Carolina Bar Association. Knox was also known for his faith and community involvement, serving as a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Cornelius, where he sang in a Southern gospel quartet.
