Their Story

Mar Gregory Karotemprel was a distinguished Syro-Malabar Catholic bishop and theologian who devoted his life to the Church and theological education in India. Born in Kottayam district in Kerala, he joined the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate congregation early in his spiritual journey and was ordained a priest in 1963. His scholarly contributions to theology and his pastoral leadership shaped the Eastern Christian tradition in the Indian subcontinent. In 1983, Bishop Karotemprel was appointed and consecrated as bishop of the Eparchy of Rajkot, a position he held with dedication until his retirement in 2010. During his twenty-seven years as bishop, he served as a spiritual shepherd and advocate for his faithful, including efforts to coordinate pastoral relief work during times of crisis. His commitment to the Eastern Catholic Church reflected his deep understanding of both theological scholarship and the practical needs of his diocese. Beyond his episcopal duties, Karotemprel maintained an active engagement with theological learning and contemplative life. He remained active in the Church during his later years as bishop emeritus. His life embodied the values of Eastern Christian spirituality: pastoral care, scholarly rigor, and service to the faithful community throughout his distinguished ministry.
