Their Story
Girish Bharadwaj was born in Sullia, Karnataka, on 2 May 1950 and became known as the "Bridge Man of India" for his extraordinary contributions to rural connectivity. A mechanical engineer, he devoted over three decades to constructing low-cost suspension bridges across India's most remote and isolated villages, building more than 140 bridges that provided vital access to schools, hospitals, and markets for thousands of people. His first bridge was completed in 1989 across the Payaswini River in Karnataka, and his innovative, cost-effective designs transformed communities separated by rivers and difficult terrain across Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. For his exceptional service to rural infrastructure and social development, Bharadwaj received India's Padma Shri award in 2017. He passed away on 7 July 2026 at a hospital in his hometown after a brief illness, survived by his children Sudarshan, Patanjali, and Rashya.
