Their Story
Geneviève Aubry was a pioneering Swiss politician who broke gender barriers in a male-dominated field. Born in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1928 to a politically active family—her father Virgile Moine was a member of Bern's executive and national councils—she was trained as a domestic science teacher and later became a journalist. Entering politics in 1971 during the contentious Jura Question, Aubry founded the Groupement féminin de Force démocratique in 1974, an anti-separatist organization that grew to 6,500 women members and became a major force in regional politics. She was elected to the Bernese Grand Council (1977–1980) and made history as the first woman from the canton of Berne to reach the National Council, serving there from 1979 to 1995 with record support in her 1979 election. During her parliamentary career, she served on commissions overseeing security, economics, foreign policy, and science, and remained an influential conservative voice on political matters throughout her life.
