Eric William Dane, the charismatic actor best known to millions as "McSteamy" on Grey's Anatomy and later for his critically acclaimed turn in Euphoria, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the age of 53. He died following a courageous public battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. In his final days, he was surrounded by his devoted wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and his two daughters, Billie and Georgia, who his family noted "were the center of his world". Born on November 9, 1972, in San Francisco, California, Eric was the elder son of Leah, a travel agent, and William Dane Melvin, an architect and Navy veteran. Tragedy struck early in his life when he lost his father at the age of seven. Raised in Northern California, Eric spent his high school years as a competitive swimmer and water polo player before a role in a school production of Arthur Miller's All My Sons sparked his passion for acting. This revelation prompted a move to Los Angeles to pursue a career in television and film. Following early guest appearances on series like Saved by the Bell and Charmed, Eric skyrocketed to international fame in 2006 when he joined the medical drama Grey's Anatomy. After publicly sharing his diagnosis in April 2025, he traveled to Washington, D.C., to champion legislation for critical therapies and was named Advocate of the Year by the ALS Network.
