Their Story
Émile Constant Bombet was a prominent Ivorian politician who played a significant role in his nation's governance during a transformative period. A member of the Democratic Party of Ivory Coast – African Democratic Rally (PDCI-RDA), he served as Minister of the Interior under two presidents, Alassane Ouattara and Daniel Kablan Duncan, from 1990 to 1999. During his tenure, he championed austerity measures and was instrumental in directing his party's presidential campaigns. Following the military coup of 1999 that toppled President Henri Konan Bédié, Bombet was imprisoned, but the experience paradoxically enhanced his public standing. Riding a wave of popular support, he mounted a presidential bid in 2000, though the campaign did not achieve electoral success. Bombet remained an important figure in Ivorian political life throughout his career, representing the ideals and ambitions of his political party during one of the nation's most turbulent eras.
