Their Story

Dr. Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil, known as D. Y. Patil, was born in the Kolhapur region of Maharashtra and had a long career in education, politics and public service. Widely regarded as one of the architects of Maharashtra's educational transformation, he played a pivotal role in expanding access to quality higher education through a vast network of institutions. Believing that education was the foundation of nation-building, Dr Patil established the D. Y. Patil Group to make quality education accessible to students from all sections of society. The founder of the DY Patil Group oversaw the establishment of a vast network of educational and healthcare institutions across India, comprising more than 182 educational institutions, seven universities and several state-of-the-art healthcare facilities. His political journey began in local governance, serving as Mayor of Kolhapur between 1957 and 1962, and was later elected twice to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from the Panhala constituency in 1967 and 1972. A former Indian politician, he served as the Governor of Bihar, West Bengal and Tripura. He was appointed Governor of Tripura on November 27, 2009 and served until March 21, 2013. On March 22, 2013, Patil took charge as the Governor of Bihar, a position he held until November 26, 2014. While serving as Bihar Governor, he was also given additional charge as Governor of West Bengal from July 3, 2014 to July 17, 2014. He received the Padma Shri award in 1991 for social work, and on 24 December 2018, he joined the Nationalist Congress Party.
