Their Story
Dieter Glemser was a celebrated German touring car racing driver from Stuttgart who enjoyed a distinguished career spanning several decades. Born in Kirchheim unter Teck on 28 June 1938, he began his competitive career in the early 1960s, starting with rallying and hillclimbs before achieving early success with victories for Mercedes-Benz, including his memorable 1963 Rally Poland triumph. Glemser reached his peak in the early 1970s while driving for Ford, winning the 1971 European Touring Car Championship and claiming back-to-back German Racing Championships in 1973 and 1974. Among his most celebrated achievements was his 1972 victory at the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps alongside Àlex Soler-Roig. A serious accident in 1974 ended his active racing career, after which he devoted himself to motorsport management and mentoring. For decades, he served Mercedes-Benz in various capacities, including as head of their motorsport department and later as a brand ambassador for Mercedes-Benz Classic, inspiring audiences at classic motoring events. He was also known for establishing popular driving experience programmes in Hockenheim. Glemser passed away on 10 June 2026, at age 87, leaving behind his devoted wife Helga of nearly 65 years, three children, and seven grandchildren.
