Their Story
Derryn Nigel Hinch was a prominent Australian media personality, journalist, and politician with a career spanning several decades. Born in New Zealand in 1944, he relocated to Australia in 1963 and became a recognizable figure in Melbourne's radio and television landscape. His work included hosting the popular Hinch Live program and serving as host of 3AW's Drive radio show, as well as contributing as a national public affairs commentator for Seven Network's major programs including Sunday Night, Today Tonight, and Sunrise. In 2016, at the age of 72, Hinch made history as the oldest federal parliamentarian ever elected for the first time, representing Victoria in the Senate as head of Derryn Hinch's Justice Party. He served until losing his seat in the 2019 election. Throughout his career, Hinch was known for his outspoken views and willingness to challenge legal boundaries, having been convicted of contempt of court on three occasions, resulting in two prison sentences and one house detention order.
