Their Story

Dermot John Murnaghan was born on 26 December 1957 in Barnstaple, Devon, and spent much of his early childhood in Northern Ireland before returning to England. He built a distinguished career as a journalist and broadcaster spanning more than four decades, becoming one of Britain's most recognized and trusted news presenters. After starting his career with Channel 4, he became a main presenter on ITV News, where he announced the death of Princess Diana in 1997. From 2002 to 2007, he was a main presenter of BBC Breakfast, and he was best known for his 15-year tenure as a lead anchor for Sky News from 2007 until February 2023. Beyond news broadcasting, he presented the popular BBC quiz show Eggheads between 2003 and 2014. Murnaghan received numerous accolades including the Newscaster of the Year Award from the Television and Radio Industries Club in 2000 and the Royal Television Society's Interviewer of the Year award in 1998. Known for his calm professionalism, warm presenting style, and authoritative delivery, he earned the trust of viewers and colleagues throughout his extensive career across all major UK television networks. Dermot died peacefully at his home in North London on 11 July 2026, aged 68, following a period of illness with stage four prostate cancer. In his final months, he became an advocate for prostate cancer awareness and screening, encouraging men over fifty to seek early testing. His openness about his diagnosis helped raise awareness and likely saved many lives.
