Daniel Castellani (1961 – 2026)

Their Story

Daniel Castellani was born March 21, 1961, in La Lucila, Buenos Aires Province, and was one of the leaders of Argentina's celebrated "Generation of '82". As captain, he guided his country to the bronze medal at the 1982 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship on home soil before leading Argentina to another historic bronze medal at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games. He played as an outside hitter for the Argentina national team from 1976 to 1988, competing in two Olympic Games, and pursued a professional playing career across clubs in Argentina, Brazil, and Italy. After retiring as a player in 1992, Castellani embarked on a distinguished coaching career. He led the Argentina men's national team from 1993 to 1999, guiding the side to the gold medal at the 1995 Pan American Games and at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. He later coached the Poland men's national team to the 2009 European Championship title and enjoyed success with leading clubs across Argentina, Poland, Türkiye, Belgium, Brazil and Greece. Since December 2022, Castellani led the Argentina women's national team, known as Las Panteras, signing a six-year contract effective from 2023. He succeeded Hernán Ferraro, leading the team to a historic gold medal at the 2023 Pan-American Cup—their first tournament under his guidance. He was married to Silvina Pozzo. They had two children – a daughter named Ariana and a son Iván, who was also a volleyball player, playing as an opposite spiker in the Argentina national team. Daniel Jorge Castellani, one of the most respected figures in international volleyball, died after a long battle with cancer.
