Their Story
Christian Lambert was a distinguished French civil servant whose career spanned more than four decades in law enforcement and public administration. Beginning as a firefighter in Paris before becoming a police officer, he rose through the ranks to become a commissaire (police commissioner) and eventually a prefect. Lambert was instrumental in founding the RAID (Recherche, Assistance, Intervention, Dissuasion), France's elite police intervention unit, in 1985 during a period of significant security challenges. His career reached national prominence during key security operations, most notably in 1993 when he negotiated and delivered a ransom during the Neuilly-sur-Seine hostage crisis. As head of the RAID from 2002 to 2004, he oversaw the critical arrest of Yvan Colonna, a fugitive later convicted of assassinating Corsica's prefect Claude Érignac. Appointed prefect of Seine-Saint-Denis in 2010, a post he held until 2013, Lambert initially faced skepticism from left-leaning local officials wary of his tough security background. However, he gradually earned their respect and affection, with prominent officials noting his deep attachment to the department. After his retirement from the prefectural service, Lambert continued his public service career as a special advisor on security zones and later as director of security at the SNCF national railway from 2015 to 2017. Throughout his career, he was widely recognized as a devoted servant of the French state and a figure of exceptional competence and human warmth.
