Their Story
Calvin Hayes, the British musician and co-founder of 1980s pop group Johnny Hates Jazz, died at the age of 63 after collapsing at his home in Spokane, Washington. He was the son of Mickie Most, a prominent British record producer and the founder of RAK Records. Hayes co-founded Johnny Hates Jazz in 1986 with vocalist Clark Datchler and bassist Mike Nocito, and the trio made their mark when their 1987 single Shattered Dreams became an international hit, breaking into the Top 10 across multiple countries. Hayes served as the group's keyboardist and drummer while also contributing significantly to production and engineering, helping craft a polished, sophisticated sound. His legacy includes the hit "Shattered Dreams" and the chart-topping album "Turn Back the Clock". Beyond Johnny Hates Jazz, he played drums for Kim Wilde's promotional band. The band dissolved following a car accident in which Hayes was badly injured and in hospital for 2 years. During the 1990s, Calvin Hayes largely retreated from the public eye before Johnny Hates Jazz regrouped for nostalgia concerts across Europe and Southeast Asia in 2010.
