Their Story
Bruno Campanella was one of the world's most respected interpreters of Italian opera and a leading authority on bel canto repertoire. Born in Bari in 1943, he studied composition under the legendary Nino Rota and Luigi Dallapiccola, and received conducting instruction from Hans Swarowsky and Thomas Schippers. Beginning in the late 1970s, Campanella emerged as an internationally recognized specialist in bel canto opera, earning widespread acclaim for his interpretive rigor, elegant conducting, and profound knowledge of operatic tradition. Throughout his distinguished career, he served as principal conductor of the Teatro Regio di Torino from 1992 to 1995 and conducted at the world's most prestigious opera houses, including La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Vienna State Opera, and the Royal Opera House in London. His extensive discography includes acclaimed recordings of classic bel canto works with renowned singers. In recognition of his contributions to the arts, he received the prestigious French honor of Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2002. Campanella remained a vital figure in international opera until his death in August 2026.
