Their Story
Borger Breeveld was one of Suriname's most influential cultural figures, best remembered for his iconic role as Roy Ferrol in the landmark 1976 film Wan Pipel, a work that became a defining achievement in Surinamese cinema. Beyond his memorable on-screen presence, Breeveld devoted decades to building the institutions that sustained his country's film and television industry. He served as media manager at the Surinamese Television Foundation (STVS), where he directed numerous programs including the current affairs show Mmanten Taki. Alongside co-founders Arie Verkuijl and Pim de la Parra, he established the Film Institute Paramaribo, and later served as secretary of the Surinamese Film Academy. His career extended to other film roles and radio work, and in 2021, he received a lifetime media award in recognition of his immense contributions to Surinamese culture. Breeveld is remembered as a defining figure of his nation's film and television history, whose creative talents and institutional leadership shaped multiple generations of Surinamese media.
