Bachtiar Aly (1949 – 2026)

Their Story

Bachtiar Aly was born in Banda Aceh on December 21, 1949, and spent his formative years there before pursuing higher education. He studied journalism at Padjadjaran University in Bandung and continued his studies in Germany, where he obtained a master's and doctorate degree in 1983, earning the prestigious Besondere Auszeichnung (Special Award) from the Rector of Münster University for his summa cum laude doctoral achievement. He became a lecturer in Communication Studies at the University of Indonesia in Jakarta and established himself as a prominent voice in political communication. He gained national prominence after serving as Indonesian Ambassador to Egypt from 2002 to 2005 under Presidents Megawati Soekarnoputri and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. During his diplomatic service, he was known for strengthening bilateral relations between Indonesia and countries in East Africa and the Middle East. He was appointed as Indonesian Ambassador to Egypt, concurrently covering Djibouti and Somalia. Beyond diplomacy, Aly served as Head of the Council of Senior Professors at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at the University of Indonesia, a role he held from 2009 until taking on broader party responsibilities. He also served as an expert advisor to the Indonesian National Police Chief, providing strategic input on social, political, and national security issues. In the 2014 general election, he was elected as a member of the House of Representatives from the NasDem Party for the Aceh I electoral district, serving until 2019.
