Their Story
Atia Islam Anne was a celebrated Bangladeshi painter whose powerful work focused on the experiences and struggles of women in society. Known for her surrealistic paintings infused with irony and humor, she addressed themes of women's regrets, despair, and violence against women with unflinching artistic vision. She was part of an important movement of feminist women artists that gained prominence during the 1990s in Bangladesh alongside contemporaries like Dilara Begum Jolly and Kanak Chanpa Chakma. Anne received both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Drawing and Painting from the Institute of Fine Arts at the University of Dhaka, in 1982 and 1985 respectively. Her distinctive artistic voice earned international recognition, culminating in her winning the prestigious Grand Prize at the 18th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh in 2018, competing against participants from 68 countries. Her signature "Women and Society" series stands as a powerful critique of patriarchal systems that reduce women to objects, while celebrating a newly awakening consciousness among female artists in Bangladesh.
