Antoinette Miggiani (1937 – 2026)

Their Story

Antoinette Miggiani was a distinguished Maltese operatic soprano and voice teacher who represented the finest of Malta's opera tradition. Born in Sliema, Malta, she studied piano and voice before winning a British Council scholarship to study at London's Royal Academy of Music in 1958. She was under contract to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for the 1961/62 seasons following her First Prize award at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society International Singers' Competition. During the 1960s, she sang internationally in London, France, Germany, and Italy, and performed at the Teatru Manoel in major roles including Leonora in La forza del destino (1963) and Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana (1965). She sang in a Royal Gala Performance for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1967, and toured the United States in 1968, performing at Seattle Opera. In 1970, she returned permanently to Malta to care for her parents, redirecting her remarkable talents to her home nation. She continued performing in recitals, concerts, and sacred music performances, and became a distinguished voice teacher in Malta, mentoring future generations including soprano Lydia Caruana and baritone Lino Attard.
