Their Story
Andrea "Ande" Phipps was the beloved matriarch of the legendary Phipps Stable, one of America's most influential thoroughbred racing and breeding enterprises. Born in Oneonta, New York in April 1944, she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and began her career as a registered nurse before dedicating herself to the family's horse racing legacy. Her partnership with her late husband Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps, the longtime chairman of The Jockey Club, spanned decades of success in American racing. After his passing in 2016, Andrea and their children continued to steward the stable with grace and vision, maintaining its reputation for excellence. In 2026, at age 82, she had the joy of witnessing the co-ownership of Golden Tempo, a champion that won both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes—a crowning achievement for the family. Andrea was known for her quiet strength and dedication to the sport she loved, and for nurturing a new generation of Phipps family leaders who continue to shape thoroughbred racing. She passed away peacefully in New York City surrounded by her children, leaving behind a legacy of six children, 24 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
