Their Story

Alfonso Sánchez Anaya was a distinguished veterinary doctor and transformational political leader who reshaped Tlaxcala's modern political landscape. Born in Apizaco, Tlaxcala in 1941, he earned his degree in veterinary medicine from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and initially worked in the private pharmaceutical sector before dedicating his career to public service. His most defining achievement was leading Tlaxcala's first political alternation when he won the 1998 gubernatorial election as a candidate of the left-wing coalition comprising the PRD, PT, and PVEM, ending decades of institutional Revolutionary Party dominance. During his governorship from 1999 to 2005, Sánchez Anaya implemented profound institutional reforms that strengthened social welfare, expanded public infrastructure, and advanced educational and economic development. He established key institutions including the State Women's Institute, youth programs, sports facilities, and specialized health services, while also spearheading major infrastructure projects. After leaving office, he continued his public service in the Mexican Senate representing Tlaxcala from 2006 to 2012, later joining the Morena party. His political journey spanned multiple parties and decades, but remained consistently focused on rural and agricultural development. Sánchez Anaya passed away on July 26, 2026, at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential figures in contemporary Tlaxcalan politics.
