Their Story
Alexei Gennadyevich Murygin was a Russian professional ice hockey goaltender whose nearly two-decade career in the Kontinental Hockey League made him one of the sport's notable figures. Beginning with Amur Khabarovsk in the Russian Superleague in 2006, he went on to play for six different KHL clubs, including Metallurg Magnitogorsk, Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, Avangard Omsk, Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod, Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk, and Kunlun Red Star. In the 2015–16 season, he set a new KHL shutout streak record by going 302 minutes and 11 seconds without allowing a goal, a mark that established him as one of the league's elite goalies. Despite facing significant personal challenges, including a battle with tonsillar cancer diagnosed in 2019 that his team did not cover, Murygin demonstrated remarkable resilience. He successfully overcame the illness and made a triumphant return to professional hockey. In his later years, he transitioned into coaching, serving as a goaltending coach with MHK Atlant Mytishchi in the MHL, passing along decades of experience to the next generation of players.
