Their Story
Akbar Abdi was one of Iran's most celebrated film and television actors, known for his versatile work across comedy and drama. Born in Tehran in 1960 to parents of Azerbaijani heritage, Abdi launched his career in the early 1980s in television productions before achieving national fame through beloved children's series. He quickly became a leading figure in Iranian comedy, earning the nickname "Man of a Thousand Faces" for his range and distinctive performances in acclaimed films including The Tenants, Mother, and numerous others, appearing in more than 120 productions throughout his career. Abdi's contributions to Iranian cinema were recognized with major awards including two Crystal Simorgh awards—Iran's top film honor—along with a Hafez Award and recognition from the Iran's Film Critics and Writers Association. His first Crystal Simorgh came for his powerful portrayal in Ali Hatami's drama Mother, with his second award recognizing his work more than two decades later in a comedy film. Despite health challenges, including a kidney transplant in 2016, Abdi remained a respected and beloved figure in Iranian entertainment until his death in July 2026.
